What makes an outdoor ping pong table weatherproof

An outdoor table tennis table (or outdoor ping pong table) has to survive weather that an indoor table can't. The top is a weatherproof melamine or resin laminate rather than bare wood, and the frame is galvanised or powder-coated steel that resists rust. The trade-off is a slightly different bounce: outdoor tops play a touch lower and faster than a wooden indoor top, which most casual and family players never notice.

Choosing between an outdoor and an indoor table

If the table will always stay under cover and dry, an indoor table tennis table gives you a better playing surface for the money. For a table that lives outside, weatherproofing matters more than top thickness. Our all-season Stiga tables work in both settings, so they're worth a look if the table moves between a garage and the backyard. To compare every model in one place, see all table tennis tables, and find covers and nets in spare parts. For backyard games, add table tennis racquets and balls.

Outdoor table tennis tables: common questions

Yes, that's what it's built for. A weatherproof top and rust-resistant frame handle rain and sun. A fitted cover still helps by keeping leaves, dust and standing water off between games.

Slightly. The weatherproof surface gives a marginally lower, faster bounce than a wooden indoor top. For backyard and family play the difference is hard to spot. Match players training seriously still prefer an indoor table.

The tops are usually a melamine or aluminium-composite laminate that doesn't absorb water, set on a galvanised steel frame. That combination is what stops the warping and rust you'd get from an indoor table left outside.

An all-season or indoor/outdoor model can. A dedicated outdoor table will also work indoors, you just won't get the wooden-top bounce of a true indoor table.
