Table tennis rubber is the sheet of grippy topsheet and sponge you glue to each face of a blade to make a complete bat. It is the part that actually grabs the ball, so it decides how much spin and speed you can generate. Players buy rubber on its own to build a custom setup, pairing the sheet they want with the blade they want instead of accepting whatever a ready-made bat comes with. Bat rubber, paddle rubber, racket rubber and racquet rubber are all the same product under different names.

Choosing table tennis rubber: sponge hardness, speed and spin

Most modern rubber is inverted, meaning the smooth side faces out for maximum grip, and it is graded by sponge hardness. Softer sponge (marked S or lower numbers) is slower and more forgiving, so it rewards control and touch. Harder sponge (H and XH) stores more energy and plays faster, which suits players who already loop and drive with a full swing. Medium (M) sits in between and is where a lot of developing attackers settle. Match the sponge to your stroke, not to the top of the range: a very hard sheet in a developing hand tends to send the ball long because the swing has not learned to load it yet.

Table tennis rubber: common questions

Yes. Bat rubber, paddle rubber, racket rubber and racquet rubber are all names for the same product, the sheet you glue to a blade. "Bat" and "racket" are the common terms in Australia.

They describe how hard the sponge under the topsheet is. S (soft) is slower and easier to control, M (medium) is the middle ground, and H and XH (hard and extra-hard) are faster and better suited to players with a developed attacking stroke.

Pick for the stroke you have now. If you are still grooving your technique or you value control, start softer. If you already loop with a full swing and want more speed and spin, go harder. Many club attackers land on a medium sheet.

Anti-spin is a specialist rubber that deadens incoming spin, used mainly by defensive and disruptive players. Most players want ordinary inverted rubber, which is what our range centres on for attacking and all-round play.

Replace it when the topsheet loses its grip and the ball starts sliding rather than gripping, which for a regular player is often once or twice a year. A worn sheet is usually why a good blade suddenly feels slow.
