What a table tennis blade is, and why build your own
A blade is the wooden base of a bat, the part you're left holding once the rubber is peeled off. On its own it can't be used in a game: you glue a sheet of rubber to each side first, and that's what makes a custom setup. Players build their own so they can match the blade's speed and the rubber's grip to their style, instead of accepting whatever pairing a ready-made bat happens to come with. The trade-off is that it costs a bit more and takes some know-how to put together.
All-wood and carbon blades from Butterfly and Stiga
Blades are graded loosely by speed, from defensive and all-round woods that keep the ball on the table through to offensive blades built for attacking play. All-wood blades flex more and give a softer, more controlled feel, while carbon blades like Butterfly's ALC and ZLC builds add stiffness and speed for players who attack from distance. We carry Butterfly and Stiga blades across both ends of that scale. A blade is only half a bat, so pair it with table tennis rubber and keep the finished setup safe in a case. Table tennis blades: common questions
It's the bare wooden paddle without any rubber. You add a rubber sheet to each face to turn it into a complete, playable bat.
If you want to choose your own rubber and feel, buy a blade. If you want something ready to play right now, buy a complete bat instead.
All-wood blades flex more and feel softer and more controlled. Carbon blades, including ALC and ZLC builds, are stiffer and faster, which suits attacking players.
They describe how fast the blade plays. DEF (defensive) is slowest and most controlled, ALL (all-round) sits in the middle, and OFF (offensive) is fastest for attacking strokes.
You glue a rubber sheet to each side with table tennis glue, trim it to the blade's shape, and let it set. We can fit it for you if you buy the blade and rubber together.
